When Syncrude operations started in Fort McMurray in the Athabasca Oil Sands in the late 1970's, the tar sands were mined using draglines and bucketwheel reclaimers. A dragline would dig up the oil sands from the ground and put it into windrows. A bucketwheel reclaimer would then scoop up the material and transfer it to a conveyor belt system that lead to the extraction plant.
